Garden Landscaping in Muswell Hill using Railway Sleepers
Ponari Builders have a proven track record of taking on difficult landscaping projects and completely transforming the space ensuring the customer gets the most from their space. One customer in Muswell Hill, North London had a neglected back garden leading down to a studio. The ground was full of overgrown plantation and old bits of fence.
The first stage of the project was to clear all the rubbish and leave the bare ground to decide what to do. Once we had cleared the rubbish we decided to build a set of steps leading to the elevated part of the garden. We have used Railway sleepers in the past ( link ) to create planting beds, steps and to hold back earth. Considering the budget and the customer requirements we decided on using 120x200mm sleepers as the main building block for the steps and for different levels to be created.
We proceeded to create the rough path and the different levels by shifting the earth and removing any excess using skips.
We then proceeded to build a block wall which would serve as the main support to the back of the garden.
The next step was to fit the sleepers in place to create the steps and to create the different levels.
The sleepers were screwed in place and fixed with post fix concrete.
After filling the steps with earth they were topped up with 20mm shingle ( link ). Underneath the shingle we laid a woven weed control fabric to stop weeds from growing ( link ).
We also built a custom fence at the back of the garden with horizontal boards attached to fence posts. As part of separating the back garden from the new steps we also built a garden gate.
Once the hard landscaping was finished we proceeded to start soft landscaping the rest of the garden.
We built a path leading from the back of the garden to the front of the house using 20mm shingle with timber boarder edging.
In the shingled out area we laid stepping stone using reclaimed york stone.
The finished garden was a low maintenance highly functional space with play area for kids as well as planting spaces for flowers and plants.
