The ground preparation is a very important step before any turf can be laid. It ensures the turf can fit in and grow roots in the new space in your garden. The ground preparation varies depending on the existing condition of the soil to be turfed.

If ground is paved, paving and any concrete or sand below will need to be removed until clean soil is reached.
The soil will then be mixed and turned using a rotavator. This is to loosen the soil after the years of pressure from the weight of the paving/concrete.
Import new top soil to use as the base for the turf. The new top soil will be rich in nutrient and help the new turf take root.
After the top soil is imported and laid out evenly, the ground is treaded on to remove any air pockets and to stop sinking after turf is laid. The final step is raking the soil.

Where existing ground soil is heavy clay which retains water we will mix the top soil with sand to aid in drainage.

2. Watering Lawn And Irregation

Watering your turf is an important aspect of keeping a healthy looking lawn. This is highlighted in the summer esspecially. Many of us are busy and do not get the time to water regularly which can lead to patches of grass dying out due to lack of water. Too much water can also be bad for the lawn as it will rot the roots of the grass. As part of our turfing expertiese we install automatic irregation systems. The system allows for turf to be watered automatically.

The pipework is connected to mains water and laid out before the turf goes up.
The sprinklers are placed at strategic locations for maximum coverage.
The entire system is connected and activated after the turf has been laid.

We also install controllers for the turfing system which enable you to set timers for the watering system to be activated.

3. Laying New Turf

The final step in the process is laying the new lawn. New lawn comes in rolls and can be purchased by most garden centres. It is important to not leave the new lawn laying around and to lay it as soon as purchased to avoid it dying out. We have laid turf in all kinds of shapes and places from back gardens to roof gardens and flat roofs.

Open turf roll and start in one corner of the area to be turfed.
Ensure connecting pieces of turf are propperly connected so that when grass starts growing, separation lines do not show.
Carry on laying turf and at each time use wooden board to compact the turf into the ground.
Use hand saw to cut pieces of turf to measure.
Once the full area is turfed cut out any bits sticking out to the sides.

The final step is to water well and cover whole newly turfed area. This is important to help the turf settle into the new soil.

4. Turf Maintenance

We offer regular garden maintenance and clearance services. As part of that service we include cutting turf and clearing leaves on regular intervals.

The turf can be cut at different heights depending on the your requirements. Turf starts growing at a higher rate after May. From then on it is important to mow down to stop overgrowing.

Where patches of dead grass start to appear we renew turf using seed matching existig grass. We combine seed with turf starter fertiliser. Finally water well and allow new grass to start growing.
